Introduction

This is a quick introduction of how to build your very own solar panels. This will not show you the fine details for everything single step, but will give you a good idea what to do as well as a full list of materials and tools that you will need!

First things first, gather all of your materials and tools. Most likely you will have the majority of the following tools, if not you can pick them up at a hardware store or even buy them used for next to nothing!!

Green DIY Energy shows you exactly where to buy solar cells for one of the lowest costs available today.

Here is the list of materials and tools that you will need, gather these items before continuing on.

Materials

  • Solar cells
  • Plexiglas
  • Stainless Steel Screws
  • Wire
  • Blocking diode
  • Wood
  • Solder
  • Flux paste
  • Paint
  • Silicon sealant
  • UV protected clear panel cover

Tools

  • Saw
  • Caulk gun
  • Screw driver
  • Knife
  • Protective eye wear
  • Soldering gun
  • Flux pen
  • Paint brush
  • Multimeter
  • Gloves
  • Drill
  • Respirator

Once you have gathered all of your tools and materials, it is now time to start constructing!

One of the first things you must do is test the solar cells that you have bought. Trust me, you do not want to have it all installed and hooked up and find out it doesn’t work. It is a huge waste of YOUR time if that happens. Be sure to take measurements in full sunlight and you can use a multimeter to do this quickly and easily.

From there, figure out you desired panel output. You will need to figure out how much power you will need for what ever you plan to power.

Once you figured out the desired output, you can now plan your layout of the solar panels, and begin making the wood frame to back it all.

This is done by carefully taking measurements, but isn’t too difficult to accomplish, especially if you have your DIY solar panel guide handy.

Wiring the Panels Together

Wiring the panels will take some time, especially if you have never used a soldering gun before. But don’t worry it takes no time at all to get the hang of it. My first couple cells were ugly, but after that they were beauties!

If you get pre-tabbed cells this will make the process way quicker and easier because you will only have to attach (by soldering) the cells together at the back. The tabs are like ribbons that will connect to each other by soldering them, it is way easier than trying to put the ribbons on first.

You will want to wire the cells into strings. It will depend on the layout you chose. For example if you have 36 solar cells, you most likely will do 9 rows of 4 cells in each. So you will end up having 4 solar cells on each string.

Final Steps of the Solar Panel

Attach the strings panels to the substrate by laying them down in the positions that you would like. Make sure your mark the 4 corners of each solar panel string you have made. Because you now need to flip them over and apply small amounts of silicone caulk to the back of each cell, and then flip them back over to the layout that you have marked down.

Drill holes in the substrate for your wires to exit the panel. And then you are able to secure your panel to the frame.

You now need to apply the clear cover and seal it all up with clean caulk. You have just finished building your solar panel! Congrats on making it this far. But your work is not over yet, because you still need to hook it up to batteries so your energy can be stored, and also to what ever you plan on powering!

Next Step

Now as you know this is brief and quick report that outlines the steps to build your own solar panel. For videos and a very detailed manual that will go beyond your expectations go to:

This guide is so incredible with the amount of information in it, and the way it is put together so anyone can understand it and use it to build their solar panel. I even was able to understand it, and I was brand new into this!

Oh by the way, don’t forget to test your solar panel out first before putting away your tools. You most likely will see more than 18 volts per 36 cells, it may drop a little near the end of the day, once the cells have heated up.
